SUMMARY

The training focused on the “Promotion of Lepcha Arts,” specifically emphasizing the art of making Cane & Bamboo Crafts to enhance livelihood opportunities. This skill development initiative was organized under the auspices of the Tribal Research Institute, catering to Lepcha beneficiaries in Sikkim.

The scheme was a collaborative effort of the Social Welfare Department of the Sikkim government and the Tribal Research Institute, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India. Furthermore, the Social Welfare Department of Sikkim joined hands with the State Institute of Capacity Building, Skill Development Department to orchestrate this training. The entire program received financial backing from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India.

DETAILS ON TRAINING COMPLETION AND COURSE CURRICULUM

The training program was titled “Promoting Lepcha Arts for Creating Cane & Bamboo Crafts for Livelihood.” This initiative fell under the care of the Handicrafts Sector Skill Council (HSSC). The participants received training for various job roles, including Bamboo Basket Maker, Bamboo Mat Weaver, and Utility Handicraft Assembler.

The main organizers of this effort were the Tribal Research Institute and the Social Welfare Department of Sikkim. Additionally, the State Institute of Capacity Building in Karfectar Jorethang played a big part in making the program happen. The learning plan, which covered a total of 710 hours, was quite comprehensive. The program accepted a group of 52 trainees, who were divided into two batches of 26 participants each.

The training itself was given by M/s SiMTEI, a group located in Deorali Gangtok. The training took place on March 28, 2022. The people who benefited from this program were mainly Lepcha individuals from Sikkim. The training was held in two places: Men-Rongong Kabi in the Mangan District and the Chardham Premises in the Namchi District.

Starting on May 02, 2022, the training continued until it finished on July 30, 2022. A special

event to celebrate the end of the program was held on August 02, 2022. The assessment of the trainees was done with the help of Helix Technology & Services, Tadong, and the State Council.
